EXPERIENCES

The Sustainability Engagement Certificate requires all students to engage in two co-curricular experiences that relate to their thematic emphasis. One must be at least 150 hours and the other must be at least 300 hours. Each experience must touch on at least two of the three pillars: economic, social, and environmental. Below you will find the two experiences for this certificate, click on the title to learn more about each. 

150+ Hour Experience at the Monteverde Institute in Monteverde, Costa Rica. 

Eight weeks in the summer of 2018 were spent reforesting vital habitat in the rainforest, collecting reforestation data on new growth forests, and learning models for community based environmental management. 

300 Hour Experience at the Rachel Carson Council in Durham, North Carolina. 

Twelve weeks in the summer of 2019 were spent developing educational workshops for environmental organizers, engaging with the environmental justice network of North Carolina, and exploring new models for community based environmentalism.
